Open Positions

Teaching at Oak Rose 

The Oak Rose Forest School is growing! We are an inspired team of educators, creatives and adventurers committed to nature immersion, child-led learning, and learning through child-directed play. We believe that children are intrinsically motivated to learn, and that they do so by exploring the world around them. Our programs are located in the beautiful forests of the Western Catskills in Callicoon, NY. We currently offer a summer camp, early childhood, and homeschool classes. Our students primarily range from 2.5 to 11 years old.

Current Openings

We are currently hiring for the following positions: 

​

  • Full-time early childhood teacher

    • 5 days per week​

  • Part-time early childhood teacher 

    • 2-3 days per week​

  • Summer Camp Teacher 

    • 3-5 days per week​

​

We offer hourly salary ranging from $15-$25 per hour baed on experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Nurture the spirit, curiosity and imagination of each child while promoting independence, respect, and community.

  • Be responsible for the health and safety of each child. This includes helping children with toileting, and to stay dry and warm in rainy or cold weather, managing risk in an outdoor setting, communicating clear boundaries with students, and addressing conflict between students. Supporting with nap times and rest times for children who need it.

  • Follow the NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence in Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs.

  • Create and foster a creative and engaging learning environments.

  • Follow the health and safety regulations for NY State.

  • Use an inquiry-based approach with children in nature.

  • Gracefully and professionally communicate with parents, caregivers, and fellow staff.

  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ongoing training and professional development.

  • Assist with set-up and clean-up throughout the day.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for the natural world and ability to convey a sense of awe and wonder to the children.

  • Ability to stimulate the inherent curiosity children have about nature, and expand on it with emergent and place-based curriculum.

  • A self-starter with flexible thinking and adaptability skills.

  • Embrace a wide variety of weather conditions as unique and interesting, part of the ebb and flow of the natural rhythm and seasonal changes.

  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to maintain a safe learning environment.

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position (including carrying a hiking pack with a first aid kit).

  • CPR and First Aid Certification.

  • Prior experience working with children, and a passion to work with a wide range of personalities, ages and developmental abilities.
